Women’s golf

The Dunes signs up to R&A Charter
The Dunes Golf Links has become a proud signatory of the R&A Women in Golf Charter. It was launched by the R&A in 2018 to foster a more inclusive culture in golf around the world, and to enable more women and girls to flourish and maximise their potential at all levels of the sport – objectives that are worthy of support.
The Dunes prides itself on including women in all facets of its business. It has employed women on its groundstaff, in the clubhouse, and in management for some years, while more recently its Get into Golf and mentoring programs for women, and its scholarship program for girls, all point to signing the charter as a logical step.
Pictured left to right are Denise – groundstaff, Karen – women’s handicapper, Dot – Get into Golf volunteer, Trish – women’s captain, Sandy – proshop staff, Jessica – general manager and Jo – groundstaff.

Kick starting a junior girls golf scholarship

The Dunes Golf Links was one of lucky recipients of funding from the Australian Golf Foundation to kick start a Junior Girls Golf scholarship. The program offer 24 hours of golfing tuition covered by the funds received from the Australian Golf Foundation. In addition to this the the Andrews Family have also offered 12 months complimentary Full Dunes membership to to the recipients. This year’s recipients have already commenced coaching. Emma Martin and Imogen Day, seen here with the Women’s Captain Trish Stewart, are the first recipients of the scholarship.

Get into Golf: Women

Learn to play the fun way

You can tell by the smiling faces in the photographs on this page just how much these participants are enjoying our Get into Golf program for women. Great camaraderie  forms between them as they laugh and learn how to play.

The program runs once a week for seven weeks. PGA golf professional Gavin Coyle provides the coaching, while member Trish Stewart coordinates the program. The programs are run in small groups and enable participants to learn the basic skills of golf in hourly sessions. Five sessions are on the range and the last two out on the course.

Light refreshments are provided after each session, enabling participants to meet and get to know each other.

It’s a fun social and interactive way of helping women learn to play golf, so if you have a sister, partner, daughter or friend who might be interested, please let them know.

Mentoring

Going out on the course is much more fun the first few times if you have a golfing buddy to play with and show you the way round. We have a group of members of all ages and abilities who are always keen to play a few holes with learner golfers.

Junior golf

Thirty juniors have seized the opportunity to take part in the club’s golf clinics offered them during the school holidays. Our PGA golf professional Gavin Coyle started the ball rolling with 14 participants on the first day, which comprised two one-hour sessions. More clinics follow, conducted by Greg Cusack. Judging from the early prowess shown, the silky swings demonstrate the benefits of taking up golf early.
The clinics culminate in a juniors only competition to be held at 10.30 am on Sunday 1 October, the last day of the school holidays. David Craig, our junior golf coordinator, says that if anyone would like to donate a prize for that it would be most welcome.

Parents and grandparents have been extremely appreciative of the Committee of Management’s support for juniors. Thanks also go to General Manager Jessica Wood and The Dunes staff for their help with administration and organising a drink sponsorship from Coca Cola.
